Even if the cave to protests we will still have to pay extra taxes for the excess waste to cover EU fines.
Personally we put the black bin out every 2 months. The green is the majority of our waste, the brown gets the cooked food waste and any of the persistent weeds I don't want to put in the compost heap. Then all the veg trimmings, over ripe fruit, tea bags, egg shells, grass trimmings, egg boxes and garden trimmings go into the freshest of the 3 compost heaps I have on the go at the moment. The local Tecco takes spent batteries and they have a WEEE day once a year but now the shops have to take your old electric equipment back anyway. If need be I can head up to the recycling centre.
I do think we need to put more pressure on Supermarkets to package products less or at least use more recyclable material. Repak, the Dept of the Environment, the Dept of Education(get them young) and the waste companies need to do a better job of educating people on what they can and can't recycle.

We have 3 babies in the house , so nappies and wet wipes etc means a bin out once a week , by my calculations its going to cost around €17 to empty each time . All used food is thrown out for the birds who are eating it before it hits the ground .

Gulls a plenty out here especially herring gulls. Since the dump closed in Ballealy and the fishing industry is almost non-existent they have started to find alternative sources of food. Very aggressive creatures.
We have crows, magpies, blackbirds, thrushes, starlings and plenty of pigeons too.
