Abortion on demand ? Can't see a Fine Gael (or Fianna Fail) government proceeding to referendum with that as an option...

This looks to me as a remote observer as a hand ball from the elected representatives who are shit scared to make decision on this issue, to some random bunch to make the suggestions and cop the flak from the usual suspects.

Why do you need MPs when they don't do their jobs? Come up with a proposal and put it to a referendum.

We have the same situation here with a plebiscite to decide on same sex marriage, when the MPs could just make the decision regardless as it is not a constitutional issue. Gutless Representatives.

This one has been kicked around for years by the major parties for the reason that their membership is split fundamentally on the abortion issue - as are their supporters.

Handing it over to this assembly might have backfired though. There's been a consistent majority in the population for some time now who would have supported a change in the constitution to allow for limited abortion in situations like rape or foetal abnormality - such an amendment could have been carried without too much acrimony.

The problem for the government now is that the Citizens Assembly which they commissioned has surprised everyone by making much more radical proposals to the abortion laws than was envisaged. And the Dail will have to take that on board...

Looking like the next election might be a good one to lose. Abortion, Brexit, spiralling public sector wage demands, the mess of the children's hospital, the feck up on climate change targets.

Enda, upon mature reflection, may decide it's time to hand over to the young turks.

But... climate change targets ?? Apart from The Greens, does anyone give a toss...

Oh wait... are there fines involved ??

I'm sure lots of people "give a toss", or are you one of these people that think climate change is a myth?

Of course, €610 million by 2020 then upwards to €5.5bn. Little old Ireland sure we don't even pollute do we!

In the history of Irish elections I don't know of anyone who's ever won or lost a seat over climate change. Barring some major natural catastrophe in the near future it will have little or no effect on the formation of the next government...

I accept the science of climate change being a reality... on the underlying causes of it I keep an open mind.
