The most important bits of the 4 courts mostly a large proportion of the
Anglican Church archive, and the majority of wills and stuff. And similar in the Custom House..... wills taxes and other stuff the detail of which is not in me head. It left a huge hole in the history archive in general.
      We'll sail be the tide....aarghhhh !!

All I know of is the late c19 censuses, think that's why there was a possibility of the 1926 census being released early as people didn't have access to the earlier ones......never happened unfortunately

There were very important Wills and Entitlement stuff....all the tax information i believe in CH...It was all important to someone....and a tragic unnecessary act...in both instances not simply in the records lost....but in the wider historical picture.
Apart from the propaganda plusses....it was a eejitz thing to do.....and we have George Edward deValeros to thank for dat....the eejihh.

Another one of those pix that has gone viral (Pinterest....Getty etc) with the wrong info attached.....Because people are not researching photos they copy and pin....the mistakes are perpetual......unfortunately future am historians will not know what to believe at face value.

Talk about 'What Annoys' (thread locked) it is murder on the eyes to see the 'experts' giving the world the benefit of their misinformation.

                This pic is all over the net telling the visitor;
May 1922: Michael Collins, known as the 'Big Fella', entering Portobella Barracks on an armoured vehicle during the Irish Civil war.
The mistake is that the ARR (Armoured Rolls Royce) is named "The Big Fella"
and that is confused with the person riding the running board.

The person riding the running board is in fact (sticks neck out for shoot down) Lt Colonel Pat McCrea .....Collins was nowhere near the barracks that day. Don't overload Google now

The civil war began at the end of June 1922.

Yeps it was 17th May 1922 right nuff but someone must have assumed....'during the civil war' Which is my point about Pinterest and Getty....both are littered with totally inaccurate info which I'm forever changing via comments (Pinterest) and as we know the NLI itself admits it's collection of Hogan is fairly well up the spout.

Anyway.....here's the scene at the side of the Portobello ent gate that same day with O'Duffy taking the salute with Emmet on his left and Maj Gen Tom Ennis on his right.

Tom Ennis and Frank Thornton were first to arrive at 3PM to set things up.

We can see 'There Custom House' ARR (Armoured Rolls Royce) there in the right background.....

and Pat McCrea second from left....obviously after he jumped off the 'The Big Fella' to join fellow officer in the march past.
You can't miss that sharp hat slope lol !!!

Pic 2 shows the Brit Rgt of Worcesters on the way out the canal gate....led by Major Clarke.....on completion of the handover.

Pic 3 Our original that highlighted the discrepancy.

The old-style policemen did not care for the Tans, one saying years later: "The Black and Tans were all English and Scotch people; very rough, effing and blinding and boozing and all." A British Army officer complained to a general: "We are importing crowds of undisciplined men who are just terrorising the

                            McCrea in Cork with Ennis.

But that's Ennis in the previous pic with Dalton and O'Duffy - not McMahon. Think McMahon is in the background group.
