DTW do you think that archives of those who were employed in Watkins Brewery might still exist somewhere, and if so, where? thanks

Well V2, it looks like the brewery is still active in Ardee Street.....companies records sites has it registered as “Watkins, Jameson, Pim & Co. (1976) Limited” set up on Wed the 28th of Apr 1976 and is still in existence at 10 Ardee Street.

Ye might start by giving them a call to enquire where past records are held if at all.....would have thought a lot was kept and archived by someone....and poss the Nat Archives Bishop Street....or why not call them on 00353 1407 2300
they will know for sure. Best Luck.

Meanwhile there's a piece here on CHTM https://comeheretome.com/2014/05/22/...-ardee-street/

Thanks a Mill DTW I will get in touch. My grandmother's brother worked in a Brewery and no record of him was found in Guinnesses. So I am guessing Watkins is another possibility.

                • 21 Henry Street : Don't know if it's been mentioned before but in the course of my Internet browsing I was interested to discover that the Irish Farm Produce store and restaurant ran by John and Jennie Wyse Power, which was a regular Republican hangout prior to 1916, and where the Proclamation was reputedly signed, is now a health store. Couldn't find a picture of the shop back in the day but
this article is about the plaque on the wall there. Think it might have been a veggie restaurant they ran but at any rate it would have been "wholesome" so think the Wyse-Powers might have approved (even if it's not an Irish business!) of its new occupants.

In the Dublin of the revolutionary period, ‘G Men’ would have been a familiar sight on street corners, never quite as inconspicuous as they sought to be. G Division of the Dublin Metropolitan Polic…

The house / shop was destroyed by fire during the Rising.

                    • so when would they have been rebuilt, late 1920s/30s?

actually forget that, it mentions in the article that it was still a restaurant in 1923......

                      • Another article about it here:

Despite significant alterations, this building retains its general external form. It appears from 'Irish Builder' references that a new building was begun in...

The Builder Article tells us building had begun in 1913 and by 1916/17 was being erected Which is why they reckon it might not have suffered as its neighbours did in the fires of the rising. So was the 1923 caff set up in the new building ?

                            • There must have been a building there long before 1913, as the Powers are living at that address in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses (cencusi? lol) although in 1901 jennie is called Hannah and says she's from Carlow (on wiki it's Wicklow).......why would they rebuilt it in 1913? It seems a bit odd.......

Yeah....considering it was part of the Arnott's building just behind the GPO....and when you look at the pix of the aftermath......by all accounts the Arnotts Building is said to have withstood the shell pounding better than most....I would bet that although the structure stood up to all the shelling....it did not escape the fire that would have ravaged the interiors including the Wyse Power shop and caff.....which is what they mean when they (most) say it was destroyed by fire......leaving the bricks standing for a new refit by 1919 or earlier.

That said it seems that some of the buildings or part of....needed some rebuild like the one at 20 Henry St....now called Boots, right next to No 21....
                                See here: http://archiseek.com/2012/1916-no-20-henry-st-dublin/

Looks like Mr Beater the builder got lots of work, and made a great job of the rebuild......

Getting back to your original observation....Yes oul JWP would be tickled pink to find a health shop where she lived all those years ago.

This shows the damage done to the right side (Wyse-Power shop side) after the shelling etc....so No21 is just a bit nearer us as we look at the right side of the pic....It's part of the Arnotts complex.
