  • Has to be said that democracy should be what it means and lest we forget the majority of the British people voted in a democratic referendum to LEAVE THE EU and that's exactly what Mrs May (although a remainer) has worked so hard to do in the best possible way for her country.

She should be imo applauded for working so hard under very difficult circumstances to give the majority what they asked for, that's to say 'LEAVE'... nobody voted on how we should leave the vote leavers probably didn't even give the consequences a second thought....not a clue yet voted leave ....but hey that's democracy for ya.. don't blame Mrs May

        • A Downing Street spokesman said Costa had not been sacked. “He resigned from the government,” he said. “You will be aware that there is a longstanding convention that members of the government payroll, including PPSs, don’t table amendments to government bills. Clearly this is an issue that he feels very strongly about and so he has chosen to resign.”

He said it was “absolutely wrong to say the PM signalled at any stage that the government would oppose” the amendment. The proposal would have passed comfortably even if the government had not supported it as it had both the support of the Labour party and more than 60 Tory backbenchers, including Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Yep at last the tail is waggin the dog...Chairman Jerry is losing his dictators grip.

More than 100 Westminster constituencies that voted to leave the EU have now switched their support to Remain, according to a stark new analysis seen by the Observer.

In findings that could have a significant impact on the parliamentary battle of Brexit later this year, the study concludes that most seats in Britain now contain a majority of voters who want to stay in the EU.

The analysis, one of the most comprehensive assessments of Brexit sentiment since the referendum, suggests the shift has been driven by doubts among Labour voters who backed Leave.

As a result, the trend is starkest in the north of England and Wales – Labour heartlands in which Brexit sentiment appears to be changing. The development will heap further pressure on Jeremy Corbyn to soften the party’s opposition to reconsidering Britain’s EU departure.

                • Apparently Michael Heseltine raised an interesting point the other day, that the electorate will have changed since the referendum: many of the older "leave" voters will have died, and many younger people - more likely to vote remain - can now vote. Between that and people changing their minds as suggested in the Guardian article, a second referendum could save the day and stop all this nonsense......we can but hope!

I think what people have a problem with is the principle involved . If there was a precedent to be set that because of the demographics ( in the short term in this instance ) it would mean any future referendum result could also be challenged and insist on voting again.
Two referendum in Ireland that were reversed after a fairly long period of time Divorce 1986 second time 1995. Abortion amendment 1983 , not reversed until 2017. I know the Lisbon treaty had a short period between both votes but that was because the agreed to amend the part that the Irish electorate mainly objected to .As one American politician once said when he failed to be elected. "The people have spoken..... the bastards ."

The elephant in the room is the single market. Theres nothing that would replace the trade benefits of it and Brexiteers know that but wont admit it.

Of course. But they stand pedantically and literally on what the people voted for and that was LEAVE.

Granted there was nothing on the paper to ask how the public would like to leave, it is taken by the LEAVE gang as HARD OUT under any circumstances.... nobody voted for a deal of any description cos there was no deals known at the time....There is now and it should go back to the electorate with the full knowledge of what the alternatives to hard Brexit are imo.

And you and I now know from the info in my earlier post things would be a quick about turn.
