Just a quick query re the safety of websites. I always thought that a website was only safe to use if it had the padlock sign and https in the address bar. Last night while ordering a takeaway I realised the restaurant's website didn't have it and just now I've noticed this site doesn't either.....does this mean the site is not safe from hackers or am I being over-cautious? If I am, what's the point of the padlock icon?

Many would be surprised to know that is not in fact what the green padlock means at all and, while you definitely shouldn't enter sensitive details when a green padlock is not present, the mere presence of it does not indicate the site is safe.
