Just a quick query re the safety of websites. I always thought that a website was only safe to use if it had the padlock sign and https in the address bar. Last night while ordering a takeaway I realised the restaurant's website didn't have it and just now I've noticed this site doesn't either.....does this mean the site is not safe from hackers or am I being over-cautious? If I am, what's the point of the padlock icon?

It doesn't mean the site is unsafe if the padlock is not there....i'd be more concerned if it had HTTP instead of HTTPS.....the S means the site is secure

I think you've misunderstood me Dinny. It doesn't have the https OR the padlock.......just the i, which apparently means it's not a secure connection......

For security you need your Gates to function so you got to look after your NANDS.....

https with lock icon means that information entered in the bar is encrypted for the purpose of security.

HTTPS is a way of securing your website. It gives you a nice, green padlock and, to most users, it means all is safe with that website and you can trust this website and feel free to enter credit card details and passwords on any site with such a reassuring, green padlock.

Many would be surprised to know that is not in fact what the green padlock means at all and, while you definitely shouldn't enter sensitive details when a green padlock is not present, the mere presence of it does not indicate the site is safe.
What does that green padlock on a website really mean, what's the difference between DV OV and EV certs? What does a CA do?

oh......have you used the takeaway before......if you have and there was no problems you should be all right......personally I would phone in the order and pay cash on delivery ......I wouldn't use a site with no lock or https....
